Field with Lights Needed!
Jackson Rugby needs a place for fall and winter practice with lights! Our home fields have been serving us well and will suit just fine for match day. But with the shorter days and the work we have in front of us to improve, we have to have lights for evening practices soon. Even half a field will do.
If you have a place, or know of one, please contact any of the club officers listed on the left as soon as possible!
Battleship Tournament
Prep for our final weekend, the Battleship Tournament in Mobile, continues. Check our Yahoo Group email and this website to keep up with current details.
Shreveport Postponed
The Shreveport match has been postponed due to numerous injuries and other commitments that will not allow us to travel with a full side. Match secretary Tim Magandy will post further details of the reschedule when they become available.
Jackson posts another win versus MSU
Jackson hosted MSU 18 Oct, scoring a nice win against the lads from Starkville. We turned this into an Old Boys fest, with many former Jackson players attending the fun, some even stepping on the pitch for the first time in years for an intense "third half."
One of the boys will have to send me a match and party report since I was away on National Guard duty that weekend but by all counts the games were great and the party rocked on late into the night. Hate I missed it!
Good Show in Little Rock though we fell 33-19
I'm very proud of the way we traveled up to Little Rock and proud of the match we played 11 Oct 08. The lads showed a great deal of improvement from the Pensacola match. Regular practices and the recruiting work to date is paying off. The match was much closer than the score would make it out to be.
The match opened with a quick score by Little Rock. They converted to make it 7-0. Little Rock struck again, upping their lead to 14-0 before Jackson took control. With hard running from the backline, strong performance in the line-outs, and good work across the field Jackson scored on a Stephen DeKock run with Bill Barrett making the kick to bring Jackson within 7.
Little Rock and Jackson traded possession and scores back and forth through most of the remainder of the game. Scott Hollis plowed in from a penalty just before the half right next to the post to give Bill an easy conversion. The lads pushed hard but missed several try-scoring opportunities, leaving them down only 19-14 at the half.
The second half was much tougher for the boys from Mississippi. Midway through the second half, we lost some discipline and a general lack of fitness showed by letting Little Rock break some tackles and get away on broken field play. Little Rock's speedsters took advantage and ran up the score 33-14 before Jackson put one more through to end the match 33-19.
The good news was the vast improvement in ball control and hard hitting. We moved the ball very well and only gave Little Rock opportunities when we lost the ball in loose play. Switching Adam Surkin back into the front row as hooker tightened up the scrum, even though we lacked a starting lock. Jeremy Pruitt deserves mention for his improved play and ball handling as does "Zulu" Bill Wojnar for his excellent line-outs, including a steal. Man of the Match went to Josh Thompson for his overall play, tackling, passing, running, stolen kick-off, and general field presence. Great match and I look forward to continued improvement. We should be hitting our stride by the Battleship Tournament!
Tough Time at P'cola
Well, we took one on the chin, losing 19-0 to Pensacola on a long road trip. The good news is that we have come a long way from where we were 4 months ago. We traveled with a full side and had a strong defensive effort.
I'm proud of the lads that showed the dedication and made the trip. We are at the beginning of a very positive turn-around for the club. We need to keep recruiting and get some consistency. We lacked a few of our regular starting 15 on this early outing but I can see the improvement. Keep up the practicing, call your buddies a get them back out, and keep on rucking!
Successfull first start!
JRFC had a successfull opening weekend 6 September against Ole Miss and Southern Miss. Arriving in Starkville in full force, Jackson took on the Rebels for the first 40 minute period of the MSU Rugby Fest. I'll have to get a blow by blow from the coaching staff. Jackson went up five nil in the opening minutes but UM came back, scoring the extra points to put Jackson down 7-5. Jackson quickly came back with two unanswered tries, converting both of them, for a final score of 19-7.
After watching MSU play first USM then UM, it was time for Jackson to take the to the pitch again against USM. Jackson made short work of the Golden Eagles. Someone send me the final score. I know Wally wasn't supposed to come in until we were ahead by at least his age. I'm not sure we were that far ahead. Besides, as one of the former Highlanders remarked, he didn't think rugby scores were kept into double digits. Old Boy David Culpepper also came in to make quite an impact on the young lads from Hattiesburg. The old man still has it.
